Playing while on travel (update with crappy pics)

Well as usual it's been a bit since the last post. I made a promise to myself not to hash up personal reason in here, so I'll just say that it's been a while.

I haven't been able to get any painting done since the Falcon but I wanted to put up a nice little battle report from a game that I got to have during a long trip. Thanks to business travel for training I was sent to Baltimore Maryland and I decided that I'd take my Eldar with me. I knew the Baltimore Battle Bunker was a pretty nice place to play after reading all of the posts on the web and I hadn't gotten a game for a bit so I decided that I'd take an evening to head down there and check it out.

**I just want to say one thing, if you ever decide to go to the Bunker in Baltimore, you must have a car. The Bunker is in an unfriendly location to anyone on foot.

The playing area is nice and big and there are a good assortment of tables. The two guys on staff the night I was there were really helpful and in my opinion they asked the right questions. I never liked going to a Games Workshop and having to get my own games. It's just odd to me to approach a perfect stranger and ask if they are looking for a game. I've always thought it was cool when the staff greet you and see you have models, then ask if you're looking for a game. They have a little closer relation with the other customers than I do and makes the game setup a little less uncomfortable. I guess I'm just weird that way. I had 1500 points of Eldar with me and they found a game for me. +1 for the Baltimore Bunker.

My opponent was younger kid (upper teens) named Zach and he was playing vanilla Marines. He asked if I could bump up to 2K and I told him that I only had the 1500 with me. He said no problem and pulled some stuff out of his list. He was a great person to play against. He told me that he'd only been playing a year and hoped I didn't mind. His army looked kind of like mine in the painting department so that was nice. I asked if he was painting up a specific chapter and he said no, some were Blood Angles looking and others were not particularly colored as a certain chapter. I'll see if I can get the couple of pictures off of the phone and make them viewable.

Here is a shot of the table that we used.

I loved the feel of the desert city. Space Elves fighting super humans over the ancient city in Egypt. Heh.

I asked if Zach wanted to roll the Mission or the Deployment and he asked if we could just play Annihilation. I figured since I got him to play a list that he wasn't used to then I could go with his choice of missions. I asked if he wanted to roll deployment and he said he wanted to just play table sides. It really felt like we were playing 4th edition that night.

We rolled off to see who went first and Zach won. He placed his land raider on my left flank with the command squad and captain in it. Next to that was the assault marine squad. Then the Rhino with Tac squad. Dead center of his deployment zone was the Plasma Cannon tac squad on a piece of step like terrian. Then the the last tac squad and finally on my right flank was the Vindicator. Very gun line like deployment.

I placed my Falcon with Dragons embarked behind a building on my left. The Wave Serpent with Dire Avengers was parked on the Falcons right, and the Warp Spiders on the Falcon's left.

On my right flank I put the bike squad with the Autarch and Farseer attached. The Vypers stayed in reserves. I rolled to take the initiative and didn't so Zach took the first turn.

He moved everything except the plasma cannon squad forward, the Rhino popped smoke. The Assault squad moved to the other side of the building that the Falcon, Serpent and Spiders were behind. I love one bike to shooting.

I moved the Spiders forward along the flank and the falcon with them. The serpent slide to the left filling the spot the falcon left. Bike move forward. I shoot up the Assault squad killing 3 and then jump the spiders forward more. The wave serpent offs the storm bolter on the rhino. The bikes slide out of the sight of the vindicator behind a building.

Turn two, Zach moves the land raider forward into terrain and the assault squad moves back into a position to hit the spiders. Rhino slides forward next to the land raider and the tac squad hops out. The vindicator moves forward to get a shot off at the bikes. The tac squad on the ground moves forward. The command squad hops out of the land raider preparing to pop the Falcon. The vindicator shot swings wild off the side of the table. Everything fails to stop the falcon (best Zach could get was a 2, I love Holofields). The assault squad shoots the spiders and take out two. He assaults into the Spiders. I kill a marine and he takes two spiders. I make my morale check.

My turn, no vypers yet. I figure that he is going to keep shooting the falcon till it drops so I disembark the dragons. The Serpent slides out to the right of the building and the Dire Avengers hop out to prepare to blade storm the tac squad. Bike squad moves into position to pop the vindicator. I was hoping to kill it in the shooting phase and fall back in the assault but I knew it was going away this turn. The bikes shoot and fail on the vindicator. In a stroke of surprise the Fire Dragons shoot everything at the command squad. I was hoping to get enough wounds to maybe strip off the apothecary. Since this was all AP1 fire they weren't getting their FNP and I was more worried about neutering the command squad then trying to drop the land raider. I killed three of the Command squad but not the Apothecary. Oh well. The Avengers blade storm the tac squad and kill one or two. Nothing impressive, should wait to get a doom on a unit before I try that again. The bikes assault the vindicator and it explodes killing a bike. The Warp Spider exarch kills two more marines, Zach is down to the sergeant now. The SGT kills two spiders and I'm left with just the Exarch. The bikes fall back a couple of inches.

Turn three, Zach starts to move the center tac squad out of the stairs terrain. The right flank squad moves up to flame my bikes. The left tac squad moves up to pop the Avengers. The command squad moves forward to waste the Dragons. The rhino slides back now that it dropped off it's cargo. The land Raider sits where it's at. Shooting sees four of six dragons fall, the DA squad lose 4 and break morale which runs them off the board. The Falcon is shot by the raider and is only shaken this time. The tac squad opens up on the bikes and they break morale. Thankfully they only fall back enough that they can't be assaulted. In the assault the Warp spider exarch slays the SGT and hides in the corner of a building. The Captain moves into melee with the dragons and they are wiped out.

My turn three, the Vypers show up at last. The biles rally and are close enough to fire everything in the tac squad out in the open. The vypers move on the board on my right flank and support the bikes. The warp spider continues to hide and the Falcon sweeps around to Zach's deployment zone edge in between the center tac squad and the Spider exarch. The Serpent speeds across my back field to get the cover save. In the shooting I doom the right tac squad and open up with everything that can hit them. They are taken down to three marines and they break with the final shots coming from the vypers.

A quick tally of the kill points has the score with Zach 2 (Dragons and Avengers) and me with 2 (Assault and Vindi).

Turn four, and Zach continues to move the center tac squad out of the terrain, now toward my falcon. The right tac squad rallies (hate marines) and they stay put. The rhino starts chasing the serpent down my back field and the land raider tries to back out of the terrain. The land raider busts it's drive and is stuck facing the right board edge with only one Las sponson that can fire at my falcon. The tac squad sits still to fire the missile and the command squad forgets about the lone warp spider and start down behind the rhino. In the shooting the raider and the tac squad fire at the falcon and only get a 2 max for penetration. The right tac can't fire their missile since they just rallied. The left tac fires their missile and they fail to hit the serpent. The command squad runs forward toward the serpent.

My turn, I move the serpent even further to my right but only enough to still let me fire. The bikes move forward to blast the last of the right tac squad. The vypers move to the back of the building on my right to get a shot at the center tac squad. The warp spider continues to hide. I over estimated the distance I moved and attempt to fire at the land raider, but I'm out of range. I should have fired at the rhino, but I always think the bright lances fire the same as a pulse laser. Silly me for the confusion. Bikes blast the right tac squad off the board and the vypers take pot shots at the center unit, killing one.

I'm now leading with 3 to Zach's 2 kill points.

Turn five, and Zach sees the warp spider sitting in the terrain. He tells me that he forgot about him, and starts moving the command squad and the tac squad back to get him. Center tac squad moves off the terrain toward the falcon. Shooting stuns the falcon this turn. The command squad and the tac run.

My turn, I look at the board and realize that the spider has no where to go and he's sure to die if he has to get into combat. I hoped the game would end on five. The bikes and vypers move up to get a good bead on the center tac squad. Shooting for me is pretty good with Doom and the combined bikes I work the center tac squad down to just a few marines. But the don't break. The Serpent turns to fire at the rhino and it turns to slag.

Zach rolls to see if the game continues and it does.. 4 to 2 my favor.

Turn six, Zach continues to try and get the tacs and the command squad to the Spider but aren't able to. The center tac squad is now clear of the terrain and are preparing to open up with everything on the falcon. Shooting actually sees the falcon take no hits. The Marines run up to just within reach of the spider for next turn killing.

My turn, I move the bikes up to finish off that center tac squad and the vypers are right behind them. The falcon moves to get in the way of the Command squad in case the games goes to turn seven. Shooting for me with a Doom and all the bikes the center tac squad is wiped out.

I roll to finish that game and it's over. Eldar win 5 to 2.

I have to say this was a pretty fun game. It proves again that the cat and mouse tactics are working. I made a few mistakes but then again so did my opponent. That warp spider never should have made it, Then again that was my winning move in the last battle against marines. Holo fields were the big winner of the battle. My Falcon just refused to die. A close second was the Fortuned bike squad. They are hard as nails as well. I decided to swap the dragons in for the scorpions in the list to see how they would do since I didn't even disembark the scorpions last time I played. I think I'll keep the dragons for a bit longer to see how it goes. Can't wait to play this list again..

Unitl next time.

I'm calling it done

Here are the final pictures of the Falcon. I'm calling it done because I really want to move on to other things. I never really thought about how long and how much there was to painting a vehicle. I think now that I have that under my belt there will be less time taken on the next one. I also started at a disadvantage with the paint that was already on it. Lastly I am trying to not be as picky and work more toward a finished painted list. I don't know though, I'll probably change the list before I get it all painted any way.. Bah.

There are of course areas that I could go back and touch up, but  think this looks ok for playing. Looking back I think I learned a few things about this one that I'm proud to say that I tried. Gemstones being one of the biggest things. I'd never painted them before and I tried doing a bit of research before I jumped in, which I think helped. Toward the end I did putter out and decided that I was just going to put a little paint on the last ones and I'm ok with that. I've seen pictures of Wraithlords where the person did really good gems on all of the possible parts and each one looked good but in the end I think it made the overall model look too gaudy.

Side view. I think the weapons turned out alright. Heh, they look just like my marines...

Here is a tail end shot. I wanted to try and incorporate the Scorpion Green somewhere into this thing and didn't want to do all the panels weird. I might try that on my next one but this was kind of a test paint. And finally we have the underbelly.

Kind of a funny thing that worked out and I was pretty happy with, was the washers that I bought to do the magnetic bases. The size of the hole for the twin linked catapult mount was the exact same size as the washers. All I had to do was mount a single magnet in the shiruken catapults and it went right together.

So that's it. Hopefully I'll have something else to paint and update with soon. I'm still putting together the Ork Boyz. Even the easy snap AoBR boayz take a bit of time to get together.

Until next time.

Two, really!?!

I know what you're thinking. I'm on another burst of posting and it'll pass just like last time. I can't say if that's true or not, but I'm going to try and put a little more effort into this. I'm constantly pushing around ideas that I could post and never do. We shall see.

As I mentioned in the last post I took some pictures of the snazzy table at the local GW. I had taken a bunch of pictures with the thought of posting a battle report, but when you're on the business end of an ass whipping, taking keep sakes wasn't really high on my list. Here is a top shot of the whole thing. It's a standard 6' X 4' table. Don't mind the Necrons in the top left corner, they didn't stay up there for very long.

It's funny all the little things that I notice, the actual table part of the board is what I call a first generation GW table. Solid wood with a sunk-in place to put the 6x4 playing area. They include a black sheet metal "cubbie" for books, dice, and other paraphernalia. I've seen this table before in videos on the web. In fact they are in the video that was taken by Fritz over at Way of Saim-Hann, Here. They are the tables that they have at the Baltimore Battle Bunker. The reason that I say that these are 1st Gen is because I've seen some of the newer stores in my area putting up metal tables. You can see these tables if you head over to Santa Cruz Warhammer and look at the pictures of the LA battle bunker, Here. These two types are the only tables I've ever seen at any GW that I've been to. Just an observation that I've made. I know, Weird. My wife doesn't understand either. Back to the table, below is the center piece of the table. This is the point that people really have thier jaw hit the floor.

Funny story about this Reaver is that while commenting on the possible cost of the table, a conversation started up about how it was made. That was when the little secret came out that this reaver was actually a cast. I of course replied with the shocked, "Really!?!". I guess the person that made the table, made a cast of a Reaver that they bought so they could make this terrian. I then asked if the person that made it worked for forgeworld, to which the answer was no. Then I comment on the fact that this is illegal, you know with copy rights and all. The conversation ended shortly after. I guess if you're not making dup models to play with it must be ok... Bah.

Here are a couple more angles. I like the tank that didn't pay heed to the height restrictions..

Moving things a little closer to home, I've decided that I'm too picky. I'm also a  perfectionist and if I don't cut it out I'll never have a fully painted army. I always tell myself that I'm just painting to table top quality and then I start nit picking all the little details.
Here is a picture of where I'm at with my second hand Falcon.

This thing has taken me forever to get finished. I'm at a point where I'm starting to get upset with myself for how long it's taking me. I mean, I've already taken two breaks from painting to put together Orks and work on the configurations for the Nobz from Black Reach and the Nobz box I got for my birthday. I decided this morning that I want to get the Falcon done so I can move on. Another thing that dawned on me this morning is that for all these really awesome models that you see painted on the interwebs, you never hear about how long the person spent on them to get them to that point. This Falcon has taken me 6 or 7 hours of painting time, at a minimum, to get here. And it's likely more than that, I just wasn't keeping track. Is this too long? Hell I dunno. I look at my own models and painting skill and I'm very, VERY critical. I see all of my mistakes and all the places that I rushed when I think I could have done better. I guess the best comfort I can take is that when I do go and play at the store everyone always comments on how my armies look. That's at least something.
Here is a shot of the console that I did for the driver. I think I'm going to try and replicate it for the gunner. I'm kind of sad that when I bought this that it didn't have canopies. Then again it could be worse, it could have canopies that were glued down. Oh well. I might try to bits order a couple but that's not urgent.

Well, hopefully I'll stick to it this time and start updating more often. That's all for tonight though. Until Next time.

WooWhoo one a month

The painfully slow amount of updates to my journal. I just wanted to start off and say thank you to "J". It's funny how once you have someone you don't know post it makes you really think about what you're doing. I never knew that you had to have a Live account to make a comment. I had always been logged in while playing with the space that it never dawned on me that you'd need to log in to post. I had assumed it would be similar to the other blogs that I'd posted in. I will try and defend myself by saying that I've never used MySpace, Facebook, or Linked in. I think those are the closest thing to what Live is doing with Spaces. Well I guess I learn something new everyday.

With that though I've been thinking of moving over to an actual blog site now that I know it's more difficult for someone to post a comment. I'm not sure where to move to though. I've looked at blogger and wordpress but I'm still not sure. I think I'll keep it here for now and see how it goes. At least I know it's not just me bumping around in here so I'll have to vacuum and clean the dishes... heh.

So on to the real stuff. I have been playing more than painting lately. Never a bad thing if you ask me. A couple weekends ago I invited one of the guys from the local GW over to my place and we had a great day of gaming. He runs Necrons as his primary army and we've been chatting about our back stories. As it turns out he likes to have a game with a little meaning as much as I do, which has prompted for a few very interesting games. It all started in a game about a month ago where we played at the GW with 2 FoC 1500 armies per side... Yup, that's right, 3000 points per side with 2 armies each. Funny enough we didn't even use Apocalypse rules. I used 1500 points of Marines and Eldar to his Necrons and Tyranids. Well lets just say that in the end I wasn't able to wipe the field of my opponent, which means that the "Body and Soul" (crons and nids, great back story) are now firmly on one of my Eldar Maiden Worlds. Stinking out flanking Genestealers..

Fast forward two weeks and we play over at my place. Looking at the way the story was coming we decided that since the tomb force had successfully made planetfall but didn't totally annihilate me, they would need to send out some scouting groups to begin the destruction of the rest of the planet. We decided on 2 Combat Patrol missions, which would decide which army that I'd play. One CP was Necrons vs Marines, and the other was Necrons vs Eldar. My losing CP would be the army that would fall back and lead to a 1500 point game. I put the Marines first because they are the first bodies used by my eldar in any engagement. Let the mon-keigh die first I always say. The results of the CP were kind of funny considering the lists I was able to make. I have very few options with Marines and most of them include Terminators and Dreadnoughts, both of which you can't have in Combat Patrol. Well the final results had the Marines winning and the Eldar losing. We decided that if the Necrons had lost both CP I'd get to choose which I wanted to play. Well the 1500 point game with Eldar against Necrons went good. I made a quick defender type list on the fly and ended up pulling a draw. It was a great day of playing at home in a much more relaxed environment than always playing at the store.

Well all that great playing had to come to an end right? Now we get to this weekend. I decided that I was going to head over to GW for a small game. I thought to myself that Necrons were really getting a bad Rap, So I piled all of my 'Crons into a case and headed out. I wanted to try and get a more relaxed game and see if I could try out a non-Apoc game using the BoLS datasheet for the Obelisk found in the Lord of Battles Dex they made. As it would turn out lastnight was not my night, in more ways than one. When I get to the store, there are a couple younger guys looking for games. I ask how many points they are looking for and when they say 1500 I asked about the Obelisks. I hand the datasheet over and they decline. I tell him that I can only go up to 1250 then, I just don't have that many 'Crons. He agrees and I see him pull his shiny new IG codex out. Bah. I won't lie, I know VERY little about IG. And even less about the new codex, but I'm always willing to try my best.

We setup on the stores super cool table with all of the inlaid terrain and get started. Regrettably my opponent wasn't very familiar with the new codex so I can't say much to it for the game because I don't think he used it to the fullest. The mission and deployment ended up being 5 objectives and table sides. We rolled off and he chose to go first. Let me just say that there were a ton of guys on his side of the table. I decided to keep the Monolith in reserve and put everything else out. This is where my luck really started to go down hill, and continue for the rest of the game. Guard first turn of shooting they really lay into a warrior unit with the lord attached. Well by the end of the shooting phase the unit makes a morale check and rightly roll an 11 to fail. Then they roll a 9 to fall back, off of the table. I'll tell ya, I really thought of calling it here, but that wouldn't be any fun. The rest of the game went basically the same. Highlights include a 4 base spawn of scarabs charging a Basilisk that didn't move, and fail to get a single glance. The Monolith coming in on turn 3 and in the Guard next turn a Las Cannon rolling back to back 6's to make it explode. Yup, not my night. It's ok though. I really can't say it was the poor ability of the Necrons that failed or the new Uber Guard. It really came down to silly dice rolls.

Well that's it for today. I feel weird not posting pictures. I'll have to make another post with the shots I took of the Game board at the Shop. I think it makes everyone cry the first time they see it. (Who uses a forgeworld Reaver for terrain?!?!)

Until next time.

The brass tacks or is it tax..

I've never been too sure about that one. Either way, I think it's time I got to the brass tacks.

I've decided that I'm never going to complete any stinking project that I start. I recently read in another blog that the last 30 models in the army are easier to paint than the first 30. Personally I think it's the exact opposite for me. I get very excited about starting a new project, figuring out the color schemes, and seeing it all come together in the first few models. Then after a bit I start to get bored that it's taking so long to finish and I move on to something else for the exciting beginning again.

So I'm making a very late new year's resolution.. Heh. I am no longer going to talk about the end of any of my projects and I'm going to start living in the Now. Carpe Diem as they say.

Now I'm just going to update with what I'm currently working on. This first new update is all about the Eldar (as it should be).

I bought a Falcon and a ton of Storm guardians a while back and decided that I finally wanted to be able to use it. I have had now qualms fielding the un-painted one. I couldn't bring myself to field the second hand one I bought though. As weird as it is I can handle no paint, but paint mismatch gives me the willies.

So I put in on the table and started thinking about what I was going to do with it. I had taken the weapon mount and stripped the paint off of it, thankfully it wasn't glued on. The problem I found was Pine sol is awesome for Metal minis, and not so much for plastic. It didn't melt the turret but it wasn't nice to it. So stripping the main Hull was out. I've recently gotten a bottle of Gesso to do my own testing of paint on primer but that takes a while to get right and the coverage over paint was meh. In the end I decided to see how painting over the top of the paint that was already there was going to turn out. Looking closely at the black I think it was only a base coat as it is, so I was hoping that it wouldn't be too bad. My biggest fear going into this project was that I've Never based my eldar with black. I like the bright colors that a white base coat will give me, so this was new territory.

I paint crazy slow but here is my work so far after a couple of days.

Still a very work in progress. The bottom of the thing looks horrible and I'm trying to still hash out all of the colors. I think that I've done pretty good covering up the black and amber colors. This has been a quite a few layers of green to get it up to here. I've found that it's always better to use thinner coats. Even though I Abhor painting a model 12 times. I've read tons of painting guides and that's all you really hear. Layer of this, mixed 1:2 layer of that, and all I hear is paint your model over and over. The thing that I was worried about here was that I didn't want to lose detail with thicker/fewer coats and foundations.
I explored one other thing with this model that I, as of yet, haven't tried. The snazzy layered Gemstones. Here is one of the gems that I think turned out pretty good.

So that is my update of what's on the Mat.

Tim.
